What Happens After Collection

After your items leave your site one of three things occurs.

Re-Use

This is the most environmentally friendly option. Items that we can re-use are:

  • Household furniture such as beds, sofas, arm chairs and 3 piece suites that are in good condition and still have fire labels attached.
  • Office furniture that is in very good condition such as swivel chairs, office desks or filing cabinets.
  • Stationary, books, CDs, LPs, pictures, ornaments, electrical items that are still in good working order cutlery and other bric-a-brac.

Recycling

If your items cannot be re-used the next most eco-friendly option is to recycle them. Items that we can recycle are:

  • Timber and wood is turned into woodchip suitable for board making (such as MDF).
  • Hardcore, rubble and soil is used to construct site roads or as a cover material at local landfill sites.
  • Gypsum is used as agricultural fertilizer and in the oil absorbency industry, or for new plasterboard.
  • Cardboard and paper are processed in the UK and abroad. Cardboard usually ends up as packaging materials. Paper is pulped, cleaned and made into new paper products.
  • Metal is sorted locally, then processed and made into new products.
  • Textiles and clothes; wearable items are sent to developing countries. Others become industrial rags or stuffing for cushions and mattresses. They are also used to strengthen recycled cardboard.
  • Electrical waste such as fridges, televisions, hifi units, are recycled in accordance with the WEEE Directive 2007.
  • Garden waste is composted

Landfill

Where we cannot recycle or re-use items we only use licensed waste transfer stations. Fortunately we are able to divert 75% of what we collected from landfill on average.
